Our approach to pro bono

Attorneys’ Association “Bauman Kondratyuk” treats pro bono not as a public-relations exercise or one-off charity but as an integral part of the legal profession. Every partner and associate dedicates part of their working time to pro bono work — a commitment embedded in our culture since the firm’s founding in 2015.

For us, a pro bono engagement is a full mandate — with the same depth of analysis, documentation and team involvement as any fee-paying matter. The only difference is that no fee is charged. We act for those who genuinely need legal assistance but cannot afford counsel of our calibre on commercial terms.

We pay particular attention to matters arising from the war in Ukraine — supporting service members and their families, as well as civic initiatives documenting war crimes and assisting vulnerable groups.

Who we help

Military & families

Armed Forces members and their families

Social guarantees, combatant status, benefits, inheritance and representation in administrative disputes with the State.

Civil society

NGOs and charitable organisations

Legal support for non-profit organisations active in human rights, humanitarian aid and the documentation of war crimes.

Human rights

Strategic human-rights cases

Cases that matter for the development of the rule of law, including representation before the Supreme Court and European judicial bodies.

Important note

How the final pro bono decision is made

Falling within one of the categories above does not automatically mean the firm will accept the matter on a pro bono basis. The final decision to provide pro bono legal aid is made by Attorneys’ Association “Bauman Kondratyuk” on a case-by-case basis — following a careful review of the written request, the supporting documents and the specific facts of the matter.

In assessing a request we consider, among other things:

  • the substance of the legal issue, its complexity and the prospects of protecting the applicant’s rights;
  • the availability and completeness of the documents that support the circumstances set out in the request;
  • the fit between the applicant’s situation and the focus areas of our pro bono practice, and the team’s available capacity;
  • the absence of any conflict of interest with the firm’s existing instructions;
  • the ethical and professional standards binding on counsel.

We communicate the outcome in writing within a reasonable time. Where we decline, we set out our reasoning so far as possible and, where appropriate, signpost alternative sources of free legal assistance.

How to submit a pro bono request

Step 01

Describe your situation

Send a brief description of the matter to office@bkadvisers.com.ua with “Pro bono” in the subject line.

Step 02

Initial assessment

Within three to five business days we carry out an initial legal and ethical review of the request.

Step 03

Meeting

If the initial review is positive, we invite you to a complimentary consultation — in person or online.

Step 04

Working on the matter

We sign a pro bono engagement letter, assemble the team and begin work to the same professional standards as any other matter.

Pro bono work is neither a service nor a gift. It is a lawyer’s duty to the profession and to society — and we treat it with the same seriousness as any fee-paying engagement.

Our pro bono principles

01

Equal quality

A pro bono engagement is led by the same calibre of partner and team, with the same depth of analysis and involvement as the firm’s fee-paying matters.

02

Confidentiality

Attorney–client privilege in pro bono matters is protected as fully as in any other engagement of the firm.

03

Transparent criteria

We are straightforward about which matters we can take on and which we cannot, and we explain our reasoning when a request is beyond our capacity.

04

Systemic approach

We prefer matters capable of driving positive change not only for the individual concerned, but for a whole category of people in a similar situation.
